NASA World Wind featurer
Land Sat 7
The whole Land Sat 7 imagery set is so large that it cannot be downloaded and saved on your PC. Therefore NASA World Wind downloads only what is required and saves it on your PC so that you can view it later.
SRTM
SRTM stands for Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data. NASA World Wind combines this data along with Land Sat 7 imagery and because of this; it is able to provide bird’s eye view of earth. When you are viewing this imagery, you will feel as if you are actually flying over the places you view.
You can also adjust the resolution of these images.
NASA SVS
NASA SVS is a set of interesting animations produced by Goddard Space Flight Center. These animations have been developed on different subjects. For example, there are animations to show hurricane dynamics, seasonal changes around the world, etc.
You can directly play these animations on world wind. As these animations are played exactly on the place where they actually are taking place, you can better understand these events and which are the areas affected by them.
MODIS
MODIS stands for data collected with the help of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer. This data is a time relevant data, which is updated everyday. It shows the events like fires, smoke, floods, dust, volcanic activities, storms, etc.
World wind displays all this data in a way which is simple to understand and easy to customize. It marks these events with the help of easy to understand icons, directly only on the virtual globe. These icons are color-coded and when you click on them, the further details are downloaded and displayed.
MODIS images can download material of public quality and display it on your screen. Material of up to 250 meters per pixel can be downloaded through MODIS. Moreover, the images and data available through MODIS are updated daily and therefore you get fresh images and data everyday.
World Wind can also skim through a large number of samples automatically. This is done through the “tour mode”.
GLOBE
Because of this feature, you can view historical geographical data of any part of earth. You can browse through the data like temperature, rainfall, etc, for the previous days. Some of the things whose data you can get through this feature include rainfall, cloud cover, barometric pressure, temperature, and student GLOBE samples. Any of these samples is displayed along with a temperature scale.
Country and state borders (for United States)
While viewing satellite images using world wind, you can view the international borders of different countries. You can also view the state borders for the states in United States. The borders do not appear so clear when you are viewing them from a higher altitude. Therefore, you need to zoom in to see the borders clearly. The borders will become more and more precise as you continue zooming in.
As the borders are laid directly on the 3D imagery of NASA World Wind, you can know and understand how the geographical features like rivers, mountains, etc, influence the formation of international or state borders.
