Google Earth Ghost Cities
We all have travelled the world using Google Earth and no one can deny the fun one has while doing so. Everything is amazing from discovering a new place in your neighborhood to visiting cities across the globe. Google earth has actually made globe trotting a very easy and inexpensive task. Until now, u might have visited cities with a lot of population and activity but now Google takes you to some of the ghost cities where the population will be comprised of just you.
Yes, Google now takes you to the cities abandoned by people for reasons like calamities, war and greed. Here is a list of some of those cities.
Kolmanskop – it is a ghost city located in southern Namibia a few kms from the port of Luderitz. This city was built when the port of Luederitz plunged in Diamond fever in the year of 1908. People from all over rushed to Namib Desert in hopes of making fortunes. Hence within 2 years, a town complete with a casino, school, hospital and residential buildings was established in a dry sandy desert.
But fate turned when the diamond sales dropped after the First World War. The establishments went into losses and closed down eventually. Forcing people to abandon the city and find new places. In the 1950,’s the town was totally abandoned and left to be reclaimed by the desert.
Couples of buildings are still standing and are in very good condition. Rest of the buildings have crumbled down and have been turned from grandeur to ghost houses.
Agdam, Azerbaijan: this city once had a population of 150,000 people. The city was lost in the year of 1993 during the Negron Karabachos War. The city was never a centre of combat but it fell victim to the vandalism by Armenians. The Agdam citizens have now moved to other areas of Azerbaijan, as well as into Iran.
San Zhi, Taiwan: this is a futuristic pod village, which was initially built as a luxury vacation retreat for the rich just outside Taipei Taiwan. During the construction period, a lot of accident occurred that pushed the establishment towards closure. The production and construction was totally halted never to be started again. rumors in the surrounding area suggest that the city is now haunted by the ghosts of those who died. The whole issue got a cover up treatment. The government distanced itself from the bizarre happenings and no architects were named. The project may never be started because if the growing legend and there would be no value in redeveloping the area for other purpose.
Craco, Italy: Craco is located in the region of Basilicata and the province of Matera. Its about 25 miles inland from the Gulf of Taranto. Its is a medieval town built up with long undulating hills all around that allow for the farming of wheat and other crops. Craco is a very old city dating back to 1060 when the land was in the ownership of Archbishop Arnaldo, Bishop of Tricarico. The population of of Craco depleted because of the poor agricultural conditions. Between 1892 and 1922 over 1300 people moved from the town to North America. Poor farming was added to by other factors like earthquakes, landslides and war. All of these factors contributed to the mass migration form the city.
