Solving issues regarding use of Sketch-up with Google Earth

Q. How to place Google Sketch-up model in Google earth?

Before you place a model in Google Earth, you have to be sure that you have cleared all requirements of Google earth. It is important, as carelessness while placing a model in Google earth can make your model to look distorted. Some precautions must be taken while you place your model in Google earth. Before you start placing your model, turn on Google earth terrain option so to get an exact idea of earth’s floor. You should always start Google earth in direct X mode for clear graphics. Then you have to set Earth’s elevation exaggeration at optimum level. You also have to set earth’s viewing area at largest possible view to improve terrain image clarity that you will import for your model in Sketch-up. In Google earth use maximum zoom effect and fly close to your selected location. In sketch-up, click on ‘get Current View’, tab to take a snap shot of your selected terrain. Now create your 3D model on this terrain. Here you need to be careful, if your terrain has a slope then you have to add basement for plain surface to place your model. When you will finish your model, click on ‘Toggle View’ button. Pressing this button your 3D model will have 3D view, where you can notice whether the terrain has any slope. You will also get to know whether your model has sunk into or it is floating on a terrain. If it is so, you can correct immediately to avoid further ugliness. You can correct this situation using Move/copy tool. This tool will help you to raise or to lower your model to place it correctly on terrain. Analyze your model from all direction and do necessary changes to position your model correctly on terrain.

Once you done with all corrections, your model is now ready to place in Google Earth. In Sketch-Up, use ‘Place Model’ button to put your model in Google Earth. Now in Google Earth view your 3D model on a location from where you have imported terrain. If you want to share your model with your friends and groups simply upload that model to 3D warehouse.

Q. How to share 3D model with other Google Earth users?

As you can create 3D model in Google Sketch-Up you can also share that model through 3D warehouse using Google Sketch-Up with other Google Earth user’s. After creating your 3D model in Google Sketch-Up, through file menu choose 3D warehouse link. To access 3D warehouse contents you have to log in using your Google Account. I highly recommend the Google Software Pack. It comes with a lot of great software that is all FREE. You can also pick and choose which of the software products you want to download. You don't have to download them all. If you have a Mac or you don't want the Google Software Pack for some reason you can download it directly from the main site.
