Transferring GPS Data in Google Earth

Can GPS data be transferred to Google Earth? How?

GPS or Global Positioning System device can be used to transfer data into Google Earth. The GPS device can be connected to the computer and the data transfer can take place

What are the connectors required for the data transfer

To transfer the GPS data to Google Earth, a special serial or a USB port is required. This serial or port connects the GPS to the computer. The GPS usually is available with the cable

How is the data translated?

When GPS data is transferred to Google Earth, the data is classified into three main folders. The folders are Tracks, Waypoints and Routes. In the Tracks and Routes categories, the data is translated in the form of paths. In the category of Waypoints, data is translated manually.

What is the process for importing the GPS data?

Importing GPS data into Google Earth is not very difficult. The following steps are involved in the data import:

1. The first step is to connect the GPS device to the computer that has the Google Earth program running. After connecting, turn on the device.

2. The user will have to wait till the GPS has been activated. Once activated, users do not even need to wait till the device is connected to the satellites.

3. The user would get a Tools menu on his screen. He would then have to choose the GPS option from the menu.

4. After choosing the GPS option, the user must now properly choose the manufacturer type for his device.

5. Then, the user can start importing the required data. He needs to select the data type while importing it.

6.

The user must also select his drawing preferences. Track and routes are set by default to draw as lines. The user also has the option for selecting the Draw icons at track and route points if the user wants to view the icon in the 3D viewer. The user can view the icon for every track or route point that the GPS device records.

7. The user also has the option of adjusting altitude preferences. While importing ground-level tracks, the user must adjust the altitude to the ground level check box.

8. Once all the data is loaded user must confirm the transfer by clicking on the OK option

How to use the timeline

The timeline is required while importing time-related data. With the timeline, the user can view the time information in a sequential manner in Google Earth. The steps involved are as follows:

1. The user must first import all the time-related data.

2. The time-related data must be selected in the ‘Places’ panel. The panel consists of the time slider that emerges at the top of the 3D viewer. The slider consists of time that matches the data that has been selected

What are the options available in timeline>

The options available in timeline include Display time in, Animation speed, Repeat mode
