What is Google Earth Outreach?

Millions of people use Google Earth to explore the world around them as it provides us a tool of satellite imagery to put the world's geographic information on our computers. You have to simply browse through Google Earth’s website and go through different links provided in the website. You will be surprised by the information it contains.

The Google Earth Outreach program can give you the knowledge and resources you need to reach their minds and hearts. The program grew out of a group of Google employees' "20 percent" project. Google allows its employees to spend 20 percent of their time on projects they are personally interested in. After relief workers used Google Earth during Hurricane Katrina to locate stranded New Orleans residents, several employees wanted to use the product for humanitarian purposes. Here lies the concept of Google Earth Outreach.

You can use Google Earth to capture the work you're doing, the people you're helping, the challenges you face and the change you're helping to enable - all in the visual context of the environment in which these stories take place. By downloading your KML files, anyone, anywhere can go to Google Earth from where they live to where you do your work. This virtual visit to the projects and people you support gets users engaged about what you're doing and builds support for your cause.

You can visit our showcase to see who’s using Google Earth. You can see examples to go in-depth with case studies illustrating the success of groups in using Earth and having KML. You can build skills using tutorials and templates. You can make your stories better by adding geographic context to your stories. In the Showcase, examples are given to show what others have done with Earth and also to give some ideas what you can do yourself. The stories or topics about Current Affairs, Education & Culture, Environment & Science, Global Development, Public Health and Social Services are there in the showcase.

You can also go through Case Studies. There you can read about some specific group’s goals, challenges and best practices and impact of visualizing their work in Google Earth. You can see case studies of UNEP (United Nations Environment Program),U.S. Holocaust memorial museum, Appalachian Voices and Jane Goodall institute etc.

With the help of Tutorials, you can start creating KML with some simple tutorials that use public benefit examples. Google Earth Outreach supports non-profit organizations that share mission of community service in areas of education & culture, environment & science, current affairs, global development, public health and social services. As a part of this program Google Earth grants Google Earth Pro licenses to qualifying organizations. Google Earth Pro has powerful authoring features which allow for GIS data importation such as *.shp and tab files, a movie making module, and a high resolution printing feature.

The Google Earth Outreach is still humble, and so while it wants users to learn from each other, it, too, wants to learn from its users. Outreach wants feedback on how effective the resource is at helping groups, and what tools can be added.

I highly recommend the Google Software Pack. It comes with a lot of great software that is all FREE. You can also pick and choose which of the software products you want to download. You don't have to download them all. If you have a Mac or you don't want the Google Software Pack for some reason you can download it directly from the main site.
