KML in Google Earth

Google Earth is the best source to explore the entire world from your computer. IT uses special type of files used by Google Earth that allows you to enjoy best possible glimpse of places across the world.

What is KML?

KML is nothing but a file format that is used for displaying geographic data in earth browsers such as Google maps and Google earth. KML makes use of an XML structure that has attributes and nested elements.

How to create KML files?

Three main tools are used to create KML files. They are as follows:

Google Earth: This is a very important tool that can be effectively used for creating KML files. With the help of Google Earth software, you can create polygons, paths, place marks, network links, place models, and image overlays.

1) When you create any of these objects mentioned above, right click on the object in “Places” pane and then select” Copy”. You should then paste it into an XML editor or a text editor and start editing it.

XML editors: KML is a XML language that is used to describe geographic content. XML editors provide lot of tools to create XML documents such as tag completion, which ensure that, do not forget to close XML elements with proper close tags.

How to open KML files?

A KML file contains compressed collection of 1 or more files to view in Google Earth. Using zip format, they are compressed and you can open them using any zip tool that include “WinZip” or with Windows XP compressed folder tool, “zip” for Linux or Mac OS, “Stuffit” for Mac OS. The file extension can also be changed from *.kml to *.zip. A zip tool will be able to easily recognize a file whose extension is changed to .zip. But you will have to change it back to.kml before using the file.

Why KML files do not download correctly from the webserver?

It is necessary to tell Web servers what type of files you are providing. Some browsers that include Firefox make guesses on the kind of file. Browsers such as Internet explorer completely rely on Web server's TYPE settings. If you are managing your own web server then you need to modify your own configuration.

Which KML Tags does Google Earth support?

A set of KML tags are supported by Google Maps. You will find the list on the website earth.google.com.

Why do I get a parse error?

There are 2 main causes:

Letter case: Like all other XML languages, KML is case sensitive. It is necessary that all elements should be correct case. For example: not , not , not .

Is there any way for controlling what appears on screen so that more details will be shown when user is closer to Earth's surface?

The regional tag is helpful in controlling what features you are showing to the user.

I highly recommend the Google Software Pack. It comes with a lot of great software that is all FREE. You can also pick and choose which of the software products you want to download. You don't have to download them all. If you have a Mac or you don't want the Google Software Pack for some reason you can download it directly from the main site.
