Amazing new features of NASA World Wind
3D Engine
With world wind you can view the details of any place. For doing so when you are viewing the maps at a lesser resolution from a higher altitude, you can zoom-in in any location which you want and view its details.
However NASA World Wind also has the 3D Engine. With this feature, you can view all the places visually rich 3D. This 3d imagery is so realistic that you will feel as if you were practically present at that place and viewing it with your own eyes.
As you know NASA World Wind has been designed for the common people, using the 3D feature also is very simple. NASA World Wind has a simple menu from where you can access and use this feature.
However the important thing to note is that this feature may require some additional hardware of your computer. Moreover, your computer should also have 3D acceleration installed and it should be on. So if you want to use this feature you should take care that your computer has such resources.
Blue marble
Blue marble is actually a data set having the true colored images taken from the NASA's observatory, the Blue Marble. This observatory is dedicated to taking true colored images of the entire earth.
The resolution of the images taken by Blue Marble is not so high, however NASA processes and combines these images with the other data sets like the MODI and Terra. Because of this you can view the true colored imagery of earth, up to the resolution of about 1 km per pixel.
LandSat 7
LandSat 7 is a data set of images taken from the LandSat observatory of NASA. The advantage of this data set is that the images have a very high resolution of about 15 m per pixel. When you are viewing the true colored image of earth, and you zoom in at a particular location, it is this dataset that provides you the further details.
The resolution of LandSat7 is so high that you can even identify your own house and neighborhood as well. You can see the houses, trees, cars parked in front of the houses, etc. Such high resolution imagery is available for most parts of the world and therefore LandSat 7 puts the whole world in a context having data which is scientifically accurate.
Moreover, the images in this dataset also feature the other color bands like the infrared spectrum. You can choose or browse through these different set of images as soon as they are available. NASA World Wind keeps on updating them and so you can view the latest images as well.
One of the things that you should note about the LandSat 7 is that this dataset is very large and therefore it would not fit on any personal computer. Therefore, when you use this dataset NASA World Wind will download only what appears on the screen. NASA World Wind stores a compressed copy of this data on your computer. This copy can be viewed at any time later.
