Introduction on NASA
President Dwight D. Eisenhower found the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1958 against the Soviet Union’s introduction of the first artificial satellite. NASA came out of the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics who is researching flight technology for more than forty years. President John F. Kennedy gave importance to NASA and the Nation and send astronauts on the Moon in 1960s. While working on mission Mercury and Gemini NASA build up knowledge and proficiency essential for flight. The day was 20th July 1969 when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldine put the first foot on the moon.
NASA’s mission is to lead the way in Space investigation, scientific invention and aeronautics research and to fulfill this dream thousands of people is working around the world last from fifty years. National aeronautics and Space Administration is the part of the federal government. NASA, an independent agency is chosen by the president, subject to committee verification. NASA came into reality on 1st October 1958, when Congress passed the National Aeronautics and Space Act 1958 on the suggestion of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. NASA was planned as an openly civilian agency to practice peaceful Space activities. Military applications of space technology are control by the Department of Defense. From the start, NASA and the military have work together in several ways and many astronauts are from military backgrounds.
Project Mercury was the first program of NASA. The program was mostly on study human aptitude in Space and to build up the tools essential for man Space investigation. The project and the seven astronauts attracted lots of public and even in future they became national heroes. Alan Shepard was the first American in space on 5 May, 1961.On 20th February 1962, John Glenn the first American to orbit the Earth. With this success President John F. Kennedy then praised the astronauts and NASA. On 25 may, 1961, Kennedy declared to achieve the goal of landing a man on moon and to bring him back safely to Earth. Kennedy disclosed that the solar program would be costly and risky but the excitement of public gave it real success. Later on the program was passed by Congress, and civilian as an expensive project “Apollo” came into existence in American history. Kennedy’s remarkable goal excited NASA and under the control of administrator James Webb, NASA they put out the project to achieve the goal. Project Gemini was out as introduction steps to go on to the Moon.
NASA’s second most important project was Space Shuttle. The agency encourages as means of consistent and cost effective access to Space. The shuttle was developed in 1970s during the period of Apollo Soyuz test project with the Soviets. The shuttle was ready to fly in 1981, but as per the standards of NASA it was not efficient, by the end of 1985 twenty flights took place.
On 28th January 1986, NASA experienced a tragedy with shuttle “Challenger”. The shuttle burst seventy three seconds after takeoff, killing seven astronauts on board. The failure shocked the NASA and the whole nation. Team investigating the accident harshly criticized NASA’s safety procedures.
