NASA World Wind Features – 2
NASA SVS
These are the animated images of the different natural activities as the hurricane dynamics, seasonal changes, cloud covers or migrations etc. they are developed by the Goddard Space Flight Center.
The NASA world wind plays these images directly on its virtual globe. As they are displayed on the globe the viewer can know about where exactly they are occurring, which are the areas that they have affected and the areas that they are about to affect. This can be useful for both the professional purposes as well as the personal use.
MODIS
Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer called as MODIS in the abbreviated form. This is a feature, which provides the different type of data as the fires, dust, floods, storms, smoke and volcanic activity. All this data is updated regularly. Therefore, at any point of time it is the present data of these events.
The NASA world displays all of them directly on the globe. For this, it makes use of simple icons and pictures. These are easy to understand compact and attractive. These icons or the images are the links for the larger and more detailer images of that activity.
The MODIS feature is able to download the images having the resolution of 250 m per pixel. Moreover, it offers new images everyday, which the user can download.
Besides the NASA world has a “tour mode” which can help the user to skim through the different samples automatically.
Globe
This is a feature, which provides the climatic data for the globe. The user can select the time for which the user wishes the data to be, and the Globe would provide him the required data. The different things that this feature can show are the temperatures. Rainfall, barometric pressure, cloud cover etc. it also provides the students Globe samples themselves. All these are displayed in the different widely used units.
Borders of the country and states (for US)
While viewing the virtual globe on the computer the user, this feature would enable him to know about the country or the state in which that place is located. The important advantage of the use is that the user can study the political borders with reference to the natural geographical features as mountains, rivers, etc. they too have an important role in deciding the borders and therefore the user can study their influence in the formation of the borders.
Names of places
These are very useful for knowing the place where the user is currently viewing. The NASA world wind provides names of most of the places. These include the bigger and the important places as well as the smaller places. These are provided for the cities and their suburbs, countries regions states of the countries, towns and small villages, the important geographical regions, etc.
When the user is at small zoom level, only the country names are displayed and when he zooms in at a point the names of the cities and other geographical regions are displayed. This continues and as the user zooms in more and more the names of smaller places start appearing.
In this way, the NASA world wind provides the user the names of many places on the globe without overcrowding the globe.
