Award Winning SERVIR-Viz application
As everybody knows, SERVIR-Viz is customized version of World Wind NASA as it is web-enabled, open-source and free software. Like World Wind NASA, SERVER-Viz also allows user to integrate custom tools to access data layers, share information or include real-time images. This is completely interactive globe environment available for everyone. It collects data from GEOSS means Globe earth Observation Systems of Systems. This system goal is to collect coordinated, comprehensive observation of solar system. It will improve our earth monitoring and will definitely increase the overall understanding of common people about earth processes.
SERVER Viz data can be made animated and transparent and can be overlaid on the two different layers. With the help of this application, we can even monitor complex interactions of earth with other planets. Until today, the application is specifically used to predict landslide events. These predictions were helpful for much heavily sloped terrain. It helps local authorities to take right decisions in critical situations as it provides timely information. Anyone can easily find out the high probability for landslides through this application.
The SERVIR-Viz application includes lot of information provided by partner countries. Number of web map services are used provide information to common public. It uses standard GIS datasets for publishing and hence can be easily integrated with any web application. This application is connected to World Wind NASA to overlay the global satellite data. The information available on the application can be viewed with two languages i.e. English and Spanish. This two languages support huge section of users.
This application is fully interpretable with other map based applications of NASA like World Wind. This application is also available through other NASA’s application as it provides link for SERVIR-Viz. Number of add-ons and plug-ins are working behind the application to provide such great functionality. Few of them are created by open-source community members, developers or users. Some reputed agencies have added some plug-ins to meet specific requirements of projects. Until today, two agencies called GEOSS and WMS used the SERVIR-Viz plug-in and add-ons to customize to show local weather information on the application.
Many developers have added such plug-ins that gets automatically updated as Internet based plug-ins. This real-time plug-ins updates the application with latest earthquake, fire or flood information for particular regions. SERVIR-Viz application has proven most useful for disaster management communities as it provides appropriate weather information. World Bank is supporting this great project and spreading awareness by providing conference presentations, training sessions and different workshops. Moreover, it is also funding custom enhancement if they find it necessary and useful for common man.
SERVIR Viz is great briefing tool to assess and forecast potential flooding region. It has proven useful with heavy rainfall events in many areas where there was 40 inches of rain and the government was able to manage this situation because of SERVIR-Viz forecasting reports. It has proven disaster mitigation and life-saving application for many people. Therefore, it was selected as winner in ‘Challenge 3D Visualization’ Contest. The international panel selected SERVIR-Viz from many different global entries.
